As the world turns, and the seasons change, cultures and communities around the world often embrace their geography and make the most of each season. We can learn lessons from other countries about how to find joy, hope, and celebration every day of the year. As said in American slang, 24/7/365!
Finland embraces winter. In fact, many Scandinavian countries make the most of the cold, dark, long days of winter! With a positive mindset towards winter, the Finns spend a lot of time outdoors. Research shows that time spent outdoors improves our mood and mental & physical health. There are many unique, outdoor winter activities to enjoy in the Northern latitudes such as snowmobiling, viewing the northern lights, and ice fishing. Then, warming up in a sauna (ideally followed by an icy plunge into cold water) is an integral part of the Finnish identity.
Japan celebrates spring. After a long winter, it is exciting to see signs of spring blossoming and blooming! The cherry blossom trees, “sakura,” bring locals and visitors outside…the world is pink with flowers and dancing with blooms. The Japanese tradition, “hanami,” translates to “observe flowers.” Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. Friends and families gather outside and lay on mats underneath the cherry blossom trees; they picnic in parks and enjoy food & drinks.
As we explore seasonal traditions around the world, we are reminded of nature’s beauty and the importance of connecting with natural world, and with others, all year round. As the American idiom says, stop and smell the roses (or cherry blossoms)! Let your dreams bloom (like cherry blossoms)!
