On May 1st, 2023, the OverDrive app was sunset and officially discontinued.
In 2017, the developers who created OverDrive launched the Libby App. The intention of the company was to create a simple and intuitive library app, which modeled what was working with OverDrive. The company also reviewed what features could be improved. According to the OverDrive website, “we didn’t want to interrupt the experience for users,” so that is why the two apps have been available until the discontinuation of OverDrive. You can read more about this here.
With the discontinuation of OverDrive, Libby is now the sole library reading app for libraries and library users. If you were comfortable with OverDrive, this may be disappointing for you. Libby does take some getting used to, and it is not always intuitive to first-time users. The website has plenty of resources to help get you started. The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library also has tutorials and walk-through instructions through our Niche Academy. To access these tutorials, you can do so at this link.
First, to use Libby you will need to know your library PIN/password. If you have your email on your library account, to make or reset your password, you would go here.
You will receive an email to reset your password. Don’t see it? Check your spam! Still don’t see it? You might not have an email on your account. Then you would need to have your email added to your library account, which you can do at the Customer Resource Services desk. Alternatively, you can make changes to your library account through this online form.
With your library barcode number and your password, you can sign into Libby. Once you follow the prompts on the screen (which includes selecting your library), you will be signed into the app. Once signed in you have access to thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks!
If you have a wish list on OverDrive, you can sync it to your Libby account. Here you can find instructions on how to do that.
If you are still feeling uncertain about Libby, the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library can help you. The Digital Services department can sit with you One-on-One to help you learn how to navigate the app. To schedule an appointment, call (631) 399-1511 extension 2006.
