Literacy is here, there, and everywhere! There are opportunities to practice literacy and language skills everywhere you look…including your weekly chores. Our Laundromat Literacy program takes advantage of a few hours on a Saturday morning while families are washing, drying, and folding their laundry. Thanks to our partnership with Laundry Kingdom on Montauk Highway in Shirley, the MMSCL Literacy staff provides enrichment for kids through games, crafts, library outreach, book giveaways, and more. It is a win-win.
Whether you are home or out-and-about in the community, be on the lookout for things to read. Environmental print is the print of everyday life. It appears on signs, labels, and logos. Even young children can “read” print such as LEGO, STOP signs, Wal-Mart, Oreo, and many others. Environmental print is an important first step in early literacy. It allows children to understand that words convey meaning.
Here are a few ideas to create an environment rich in language at home, in the car, on a walk through the neighborhood, while waiting for an appointment…
- Add empty food boxes to play areas
- Use old magazines and newspapers to cut out pictures
- Label common household objects such as mirror, sink, toothpaste, etc.
- Notice street signs and license plates
- Send cards and letters to family and friends
- Play “I Spy”
- Create a scavenger hunt
